Drive and stay in Hodka at Great Rann of Kutch

Winters is the right time to visit Great Rann of Kutch as water starts receding September onwards. I had planned our trip just before the “Rann Festival” for the end of November because of two simple reasons .i.e. One, I don’t want to visit Kutch when there are too many people for the festival and secondly I wanted to avoid the peak season tariff.
So, we took a late morning flight from Delhi to Ahmadabad and spent our day roaming around in Ahmedabad markets to do reiki for my shopping (Which I planned to do after coming back from Kutch) and we enjoyed some interesting food.
From Ahmedabad, we traveled by Bdts Bhuj Exp. It is an overnight train to Bhuj and I prefer overnight trains because I can sleep and reach my destination when I woke up.
The train was on time and we reached Bhuj station around 7.30 AM. I had booked a Bunga (Hut) in Sham e Sarhad in advance. We spoke to a couple of taxi drivers and finally hired a taxi for next few days to visit Great Rann of Kutch, Lakhpat, Mandvi, Narayan Sarovar, Bhujodi, Mata na mad etc.
It was crisp morning and we started for Hodka, it’s going to be our base for next two days.
While we were driving, we saw some birds and water bodies. The drive was very relaxing.
On the way, we stopped to have breakfast at small tea shop because there are no proper restaurants on the way to Rann. Second reason for stopping was to get a photocopy of ID proof because we required a permit to enter Rann/Kutch area because it is very close to Pakistan border so it’s mandatory. We have to struggle to get a photocopy done as there was no electricity. We waited unnecessarily for half and hour. It’s better to carry a photocopy of ID with you in advance.
The process to get a permit is very simple as they require very basic information on the one-page form.

After getting a permit we moved to Hodka. It took us another 20-25 minutes. Our resort was in middle of nowhere, there was lots of barren land around it with shrubs or babul trees. But for people like us, it was peaceful.

We made Hodka as our base and from here visited all surrounding areas.

    1. This is the resort where we stayed. They have big mud houses and tented accommodation in this complex.
This place was also features in Gujarat tourism’s advertising campaign with Amitabh Bachanan.
